On behalf of the entire Clara Barton faculty and staff, I extend a warm welcome to all our students and their families. Barton is a neighborhood CPS school serving about 800 students from Head Start through eighth grade. We are working very hard to provide a quality education to all our students and become an exemplary school in the City of Chicago.
During the 2007-08 school year we made great progress. Everyone knows that a student must be able to read and comprehend what s/he is reading in order to be successful in school and in life. At Barton we use a Balanced Literacy approach in teaching children to read and write. We carefully assess children to determine their individual needs and strengths; and we develop lessons and learning opportunities to fit each child.
During the 2008-09 school year we continued to build on our success with Readers' Workshop and Writers' Workshop. In Math and Science we continued to implement a rigorous hands-on learning curriculum. Additionally, our students studied the Fine & Performing Arts (i.e., art studio, piano, chorus, music and art appreciation, percussion, and African dance and percussion); used the Library for reading and research; developed skills in using all the technology available with computers and the internet; and, developed our children’s physical abilities through physical education.
For the 2009-2010 school year…
At Clara Barton, we have a single objective: To provide a quality education to each and every student. We intend to keep the focus on our students. We know that all students can learn and achieve at their highest potential. Working in partnership with you, our students' parents and guardians, we can support our students on the road to success.
The updated Parent Handbook has been developed to serve as an easy reference to the guidelines, procedures and expectations at Clara Barton Elementary School. Please take time to read this handbook. It is our belief that through clear communication and community we can support the growth, development and success of each student. We have an open door policy at Barton. You are always welcome to discuss any problem, concern or idea with both me and the entire faculty. Working together, in partnership, we will make the 2009-10 school year an amazing, successful year; a year filled with pride and accomplishments!
Educationally yours,
Terrence P. Carter, Principal
